Self-Designed Major Aptitude Survey

FOIS Form

A web survey for exploring 52 self-designed majors through interests at Chonnam National University's four-year exploratory studies division

What I built

A web survey built to help first- and second-year high school students explore the self-designed majors in Chonnam National University's four-year exploratory studies division, where I study. Answering 60 questions on a five-point scale returns three of the 52 majors closest to your interests. It began with 54 majors; the major list, questions, and recommendation method were later revised. Results are calculated in the browser without login or server storage and serve as a reference for career exploration, not an ability assessment or major assignment.

History

  1. Exploring majors in our division

Connected answers to 60 questions with the top 3 recommendations among 54 self-designed majors, helping high school students explore Chonnam National University's four-year exploratory studies division.

  2. Refining recommendation scores

Set 3 as the neutral response and normalized score scales so interest areas with different numbers of questions would not gain an advantage.

  3. Checking recommendation bias

Repeatedly compared intended responses for each major with random responses, checked whether every major could be recommended and whether results favored particular majors, and refined questions and weights.

  4. Results without retaining answers

Calculated the top 3 entirely in the browser, without login, a server, or personal information, and made answers disappear on refresh.

  5. Rechecking 52 majors

Organized 58 core questions across 29 interest areas and 2 follow-up questions that vary with responses. Used simulated answers to check recommendation bias and changes in results as interests shift, and randomized the display order of exact ties for each survey. These checks are distinct from validation of actual students' aptitudes.

  6. Updated screens and a new address

Added the division logo and the Self-Designed Major Aptitude Survey name, and revised the 52-major list, questions, and results screens. Moved to foisform.kyu-lab.com and set up Cloudflare to automatically deploy changes from GitHub's main branch.

  7. Clearer survey guidance

Refined the guidance to explain that the survey explores interests and does not determine ability or aptitude. It recommends reviewing the curriculum and consulting an academic advisor before deciding. These copy changes were checked locally and are still awaiting deployment.
